Please visit https://www.hielscher.com/levitate for more information! In this video we use acoustic levitation to suspend solid and liquid particles in mid-air. We use a Hielscher UP400St - a standard 400 Watts ultrasonic homogenizer. We set the amplitude to 100%. For levitation, a high amplitude works better than a low amplitude. The sonotrode used in this experiment produces 118 micrometer oscillations at the 100% setting. The 40mm diameter surface combined with a high amplitude produces a strong levitation effect. We start the ultrasonic probe and let it run continuously. Generally speaking, all our ultrasonic homogenizers can be used for levitation experiments. So if you have access to an ultrasonic homogenizer, you can replicate this experiment easily. Acoustic levitation does not work in vacuum, but it will work in other gases or at higher pressure. The UP400St works at a frequency of 24kHz. The resulting wavelength in air is 14.3mm. We adjusted the reflector position to a distance from the sonotrode tip that equals a multiple of this wavelength. If the distance between the sonotrode and the reflector plate is not set correctly, the particle position will not be stable. One reflector has an concave surface, that helps focusing the sound. It is better for strong levitation effects. For light object levitation, a flat reflector is sufficient. Even a regular business can act as a reflector. The business card snaps to the correct position under the probe. This makes for a simple levitator demonstration. Upside-down setups are possible, too. The acoustic radiation pressure from high intensity ultrasonic waves counteracts gravity. The particles - liquid or solid - gather at the nodes of the standing wave between sonotrode and reflector. Acoustic levitation harnesses acoustic radiation forces to overcome gravity. It is a interesting phenomenon with real-world applications. Hielscher supplies commercial grade levitators for the contactless lifting of microchips and for the contactless transport of silicon wafers or mobile phone displays. Using a levitator setup, you can grow and study hovering crystals, or react micro-droplets while suspended in mid-air. The UP400St setup has an impressive levitation power. You can lift expanded polystyrene beads, paper particles, multiple water droplets or lentils. We levitate a 200mg dried soybean. We show a UP100H homogenizer levitating expanded polystyrene beads. As mentioned earlier, you can use almost all ultrasonic homogenizers for acoustic levitation. You can see the shorter wavelength resulting from the 30kHz frequency. What would you like to levitate?
