Part of the CHUtalks: Ideas. Research. Discoveries series from the Churchill College Postgraduate and Fellowship community. Decisions concerning poverty alleviation and urban development can have knock-on effects on the sustainable development goal outcomes. Half-baked slum rehabilitation policies can increase occupants’ distress; alter household practices and increase energy consumption. People living in slums are especially vulnerable to such unintended consequences of slum rehabilitation and myopic energy policies. To avoid problem-shifting between the change in built environment, household practice and energy-use my research aim to deepen understanding of their interactions. By modelling the poverty burden of over 1200 slum occupants, Ramit's PhD provides a data-driven evidence base for policymakers to promote sustainability strategies for alleviating poverty in the Global South.
