Close up same STORYLINE Revolutionary fighters battled block by block on Saturday as snipers rained fire from rooftops in fierce street fighting in Moammar Gadhafi's hometown of Sirte, the most important remaining bastion of support for the fugitive leader. To the east of the city, NTC (National Transitional Council) fighters took up positions just over a kilometre (half a mile) from Sirte University, from where pro-Ghadafi fighters still put up fierce resistance. Anti-Gadhafi forces pounded the area around the university with anti-aircraft guns, automatic weapons and mortars. Fighters had also pushed to within less than half a mile (kilometre) from loyalist fighters dug in around Sirte's Ouagadougou convention centre and Green Square in the heart of the city. NTC commanders earlier said they hoped to take the city by the end of the day, and a military spokesman in Tripoli said he expected the city to be in revolutionary hands in the next 24 hours. The battle for Sirte is crucial because Libya's new leaders have promised to declare liberation after it is captured, even if fighting continues elsewhere and Gadhafi remains on the run. That will allow them to move forward with setting a timeline for elections and establishing normality in the North African nation. Gadhafi forces also remain entrenched in the central city of Bani Walid, but the transitional leaders say they will declare liberation without it because Sirte's fall will give them control over all seaports and harbours.
