What exactly is decarboxylation and why is it important? Decarboxylation is the process of heating cannabis over a period of time in order to convert THCA into THC. What is THCA? THCA (TetraHydroCannabinolic Acid) is a cannabinoid found within the trichomes of the cannabis plant. THCA must be converted into THC via the decarboxylation process in order for you to feel any psychoactive effects. Decarboxylation is a term commonly used for heating cannabis in an oven for cooking and infusing. However, cannabis is also decarbed when it is burned, vaporized, and even partially during the drying/curing process. Heat and time are what cause decarboxylation.
