How Is Ethylene Glycol Produced? -- Ethylene glycol is commercially produced through a two-step process that begins with ethylene. In the first step, ethylene is reacted with oxygen over a silver-based catalyst at elevated temperatures (200-300°C) and pressure, a process known as direct oxidation, to create ethylene oxide (EO). This highly reactive intermediate is then subjected to the second step, hydration. The ethylene oxide is mixed with a large excess of water and heated under pressure, causing the EO ring to open and form monoethylene glycol (MEG), the primary desired product. This hydrolysis reaction also yields smaller amounts of byproducts like diethylene glycol (DEG) and triethylene glycol (TEG). The final stage involves purifying the crude glycol mixture through multi-stage distillation to separate the water and isolate the high-purity MEG from the higher glycols. ⚠️ Disclaimer: Videos are created for educational purposes only and do not constitute professional, medical, financial, or legal advice.
