STORYLINE Humans and animals alike struggled to keep cool in a heatwave affecting parts of Europe on Thursday. Serbian authorities advised people to stay indoors and drink lots of water as temperatures climbed towards 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit). Even the animals at the Belgrade Zoo found the temperatures hard to take. Zoo keeper Nadja Radovic says ensuring the animals remain cool and get plenty of fluids is key. 'We have to take certain measures when conditions are like this. We shower the bears and elephants, we give them lots of fresh food. Animals who eat fruit get more fruit than usual," she said. Temperatures soared in Hungary too. Hundreds of people cooled off in Budapest's fountains. As five-year-old Anna Racz put it: "It's the best place to be in this heat, because we can put our feet into the water." Her sound advice came as officials warned temperatures on paved roads could climb as high as 60 degrees Celsius (140 Fahrenheit).
