Vocals, arrangement and video by Farya Faraji, with many thanks to my boi Arash for helping out with the latter. This is a Turkish song from the Alevi Bektashi order, a subset of Sufi Islam with a strong historical presence in Anatolia--Sufi Islam is a subset of Islam concerned with the mystical aspect of religion, often using music and rhythm as a means of spiritual and religious expression--the typical image of whirling Turkish dervishes, for example, is a well known image of Turkish Sufism. The lyrics express a wish of reconciliation from the perspective of the Bektashis--they were hunted during a certain era of the Ottoman Empire for their deviations from the mainstream orthodoxy adopted by the Sultanate, and the words in the song express the idea that the Bektashi way of Islam is no less acceptable than that of those oppressing them, the "zahid," and that their ways are not heretical, but simply another way of accessing the same truth. The instrumentation is typically Turkish, featuring the qanun, the ney, often used by Turkish sufis, the bendhir drum, also widely used by the latter, the ubiquitous Turkish bağlama, and the Turkish kopuz, the instrument I hold in the video, which I bought in Antalya during the same trip in which I filmed this video in October of 2021. Lyrics in Turkish: Zahit bizi tan eyleme, Hay hay, Hak ismin okur dilimiz, Hey canım, Hey canım, Hak ismin okur dilimiz, Eyvallah, Hey, hey dost, Sakın efsane söyleme, Hay hay, Hazrete varır yolumuz, Hey canım, Hey canım, Hazrete varır yolumuz, Eyvallah, Hey, hey dost, English translation: Believer, do not defile us, Our tongues read the name God too, Do not spin fairy tales about us, Our road goes to his Excellency too,
