Reviews: "I'm always on the lookout for movies documenting the Great Depression. Most of the highest quality films I've seen have received some attention, reviews, or major publicity to give me a heads up that they exist. But this one seems to have slipped under the radar - and I'm not sure why. I was mesmerized by the personal recollections from a variety of well known figures such as Buzz Aldrin, Ray Bradbury, Jerry Stiller, and Mickey Rooney - along with many others. They brought the era to life and also revealed how such turbulent and painful years permanently affected their lives, often shaping their careers. The title of the film comes from an Ernest Hemingway quote: "The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong in the broken places." Many, but of course not all, as Stiller reveals in a particular moving account of a man he knew who ran a newstand and the turn of events which shocked Stiller. He seemed near tears when recalling that incident. Others remembered equally compelling moments. In addition to personal recollections there are some vivid film clips (some rare) as well as a look at the art and industries which arose during and after the Depression years. I was shocked to learn that one wonderfully vivid wall mural was later covered with a solid coat of paint to conceal images which revealed the reality of the Depression, apparently too dark and harsh for some administrators. Thankfully, this work is restored and a portion of the film is devoted to that process and the reactions when the mural is again on public display. One criticism: I did find the transition from the Depression years to the current economy to be a bit awkward and jarring. It just wasn't quite seamless and natural. But our entire family was still very moved by this documentary and the youngest son gained a new understanding of the Depression's impact on U.S. history. The film not only focuses on some very dark incidents but serves as a reminder of resilience and survival. Highly recommended! The director of the film, Hans Fjellestad, also created other documentaries, including Moog, The Heart is a Drum Machine, and Sunset Strip. The Heart is a Drum Machine has received the most acclaim and is next on my list of "must see" documentaries. I'm eager to read reactions from other viewers of When the World Breaks as well as insight about why this film received little acclaim.
