Materials: 1 x Garbage bag (suggested bigger is better) 1 x Nylon Twine 2 x Rubberband 1 x Postman rubber band 1 x Retractable ruler 1 x Paper punch 1 x Scotch tape (suggested cloth tape is better) 1 x Flexible straw 1 x Scissor 2 x Nails As water rocket is a potentially dangerous activity and so to be safe to play with your students or kids, besides applying pressure below 200kPa, we can build a parachute to slow down the speed when it landing. Parachute attached can highly decrease the potential injury when you have fun with your small kids. Parachutes are designed to reduce the terminal velocity of the falling object. Terminal velocity is reached when the weight of the object is equal to the drag force caused by the air resistance. At that time, there is no net acceleration, and the object keeps on falling at a steady speed. To further slow down the falling speed (reduce the terminal velocity), we can build a large parachute because the drag force increases with increases the surface area of the parachute. Note: The larger the surface area of the parachute the longer time needed to open the parachute, so to ensure it can open smoothly at the right altitude, the method of folding the parachute is very important.
