(23 Nov 1998) English/Nat U-S President Bill Clinton listened to complaints about the lack of voting rights for American citizens on the Pacific island of Guam and promised to help ensure that their voices would be heard in Washington. Guam was seized by Japan after the attack on Pearl Harbour and was occupied until it was retaken by American troops in a bloody struggle in 1944. Clinton made a four-hour stop on this Western Pacific island returning home from South Korea and Japan in his brief five day tour of Asia. 00:00:00 For Air Force One this was a four-hour stopover on the way home. After the freezing cold of South Korea's military outposts, the Pacific island of Guam must have been a welcome change for Clinton. About 150-thousand people live on the island, 8-thousand 900 miles from Washington. The island was seized by Japan after the attack on Pearl Harbour and was occupied until it was retaken by American troops in a bloody struggle in 1944. 00:23 Several thousand people flocked to a park to hear Clinton speak. The president praised them for their strength in dealing with the Asian financial crisis. As well as applause, he got an earful of complaints about the island's status. 00:34 SOUNDBITE: (English) "Like Hawaii, Guam has been more vulnerable than other parts of America for Asian financial woes. I am confident however that the people who weathered the high winds of typhoon Parker with such courage and resilience can weather these economic storms as well". SUPER CAPTION: Bill Clinton, U-S President 00:51 Residents feel their calls for commonwealth status -- with more governing powers -- have fallen on deaf ears. But the visit was intended to raise morale. 00:56 And Clinton took time to remember those who'd died in the struggle to secure the island. 01:03 He placed a wreath at a war memorial engraved with the names of thousands of Americans and Guamanians who'd laid down their lives many years ago.
