I apologize for a belated happy birthday tribute to Nicolai Gedda, who turned 83 this past Friday, 11 July. Gedda's middle and lower register was not of particular brilliance, but once he entered the upper register past the passaggio, it was the voice of Heaven. I have never heard such glorious high notes from any other tenor, at least in terms of the sheer beauty and brilliance itself. He sings in this live performance the 'Salut, demeure' from Faust...a brilliant altogether rendition with a blossoming glorious top C at the end. May Maestro Gedda be blessed with good health and remain with us for a very very very long time. One of the last of the great tenors of the past century.
