There is a lever that drops behind each tooth, and a screw used to tighten up the lever/tooth against the tunsten carbide hand cranked circular "file" to sharpen the tooth. You insert the hand cranked file via a tube set to the correct angle to hold things in place and make sure that each tooth is sharpened exactly the same. [There are two tubes facing opposite directions to do the left and right teeth.] I did all of the left teeth first (skipping every other tooth) and then switched over to the 2nd tube so that I only had to reposition the lever full one time in the process. It probably took me 35 minutes to sharpen a 14" chain, but I was going slowly as I learned how to use it, and I could probably do it again in 25 minutes. So using it is a bit slower than with a hand held file, but the hand cranking action is easier than using a file by hand, and the jig ensures that each tooth is done at exactly the same angle. They include a pair of gloves with the package, and I was glad they had, as you need to grab/pull the chain after each tooth is done. I also appreciate the compact storage case (with belt loop) to keep everything organized between sharpening sessions. It worked well enough, although I had to slightly loosen (to insert the file) and then re-tighten (for grinding) the lever screw for each tooth, which got annoying. I think a professional who needs to sharpen their chain frequently would either learn to do it by hand, or invest in a powered chain sharpener. I see this tool as best for the home user who very occasionally needs to sharpen their chain and wants the precise and repeatable alignment offered by the jig.
