My top ten favourite children's chapter books about animals 1. The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me - Roald Dahl "The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me" by Roald Dahl is a hoot. This is a great first-chapter book for children and the illustrations by Quentin Blake are outrageously hilarious. The story is about a wildly unusual team of window cleaners. 2. Mr Popper's Penguins - Florence and Richard Atwater "Mr. Popper's Penguins" by Florence and Richard Atwater is a delightful classic. What happens when crates of penguins begin arriving at Mr. Popper's house from Antarctica? How will Mr. Popper feed and house all of those lively penguins? This story is a hoot and is such a fun tale. It would be a great first "chapter" book for children. 3. "Together Forever" - Mary Quattlebaum A great first chapter book from National Geographic Kids with great photos, good text, and nice colourful pages. About unusual animal friendships. A sweet book. 4a. "Thea Stilton and the Journey to the Lion's Den" - Geronimo Stilton A great first chapter book with an entertaining adventure story set on the African savannah. Follow the Thea mouselets as they embark on safari and have to rescue a lion cub. 4b. "Thea Stilton and the Madagascar Madness" - Geronimo Stilton Another wonderful adventure story by Geronimo Stilton. Take a trip with the Thea mouselets to Madagascar and help them capture some tricky animal traffickers. 5. "Black Beauty" - Anna Sewell Anna Sewell wrote only one story about a horse, Black Beauty. It sold millions of copies because it is a heartwarming story. It is a tearjerker, but thankfully due to this book reforms were made regarding the treatment of horses. 6. "The Jungle Book" - Rudyard Kipling Illustrated by Nicola Bayley this is a wonderful edition of the classic children's tale of Mowgli, the boy who is raised by wolves. It includes iconic Indian mammals like Shere Khan, the tiger; Baloo, the bear; Kaa, the python; and Bagheera, the black panther. A story about finding one's place in the world and true friendship. 7. "Charlotte's Web" - E.B. White "Charlotte's Web" by E.B. White is a tale about caring for one another and personal responsibility. A young lady on a farm adopts an unusual pet and a clever spider that spins words decides the pet's fate. A classic fable not to be missed by sensitive souls. 8. "The Akimbo Adventures" - Alexander McCall Smith Alexander McCall Smith is a talented writer who writes books for both children and adults. He known for his writing flair and wit. His Akimbo series is a great first chapter book series for children around 8-10. Story one: Akimbo and the Lions This particular story is about what happens when Akimbo, whose father is a park ranger, tags along to see what happens when they go to trap a lion that has been stealing livestock. Something unexpected happens that changes Akimbo's life for the better, forever. I won't tell you what, because that would spoil the story, but let's just say Akimbo ends up taking home a very unusual pet which he has to raise and look after. Such a sweet chapter book, I would recommend it to any child who loves stories about wildlife. Story two: Akimbo and the elephants Akimbo and his father must deal with poachers. Story three: Akimbo and the crocodile man An adventure story involving Akimbo and crocodiles. 9. "Pax" - Sara Pennypacker I thought the book was well written and was a good coming-of-age type of story. It is appropriate for middle-school aged children with some guidance. Unfortunately the subject matter was a bit too sad and dramatic for a sensitive soul however. I would rather recommend a book like "Wish" by Barbara O'Connor which is a more light-hearted read for animal lovers. Be sure to have some tissues handy when you read this book!! You are likely to shed a tear or two when you read it. 10. "Operation Rhino" - Lauren St. John After taking a walk with wild rhinos at Imire Game Park in Zimbabwe St. John was inspired to write a story about these vulnerable creatures who are sadly often the target of poachers for their horns. Once again the story follows an adventure with Martine and her friend, Ben which has them desperately trying to save the life of a young rhino after his parents are poached. A bit of mystery is thrown in for good measure. A well-written and engaging story suitable for children in the 10-12 age group. #recommendedreading #booksaboutanimals
