Presenters: Miles McNall, Michigan State University Diane Doberneck, Michigan State University Janice McDonnell, Rutgers University/ARIS Megan Heitmann, Grants Hub at Iowa State University/ARIS Kerry Vachta, SERC Researchers are turning to an emerging class of professionals – broader impacts (BI) professionals – for help in conceptualizing, designing, and implementing their broader impacts activities for NSF proposals. As this area of professional practice develops, so does the need for competency-based training. However, a complete and empirically derived list of competencies remains to be articulated. In this session, participants will learn how researchers reviewed and consolidated relevant competency frameworks and, using the Delphi technique with 11 BI experts, identified 67 competencies in 11 competency domains. Participants will also learn about a follow-up study designed to arrive at a more parsimonious set of competencies. Participants will have the opportunity to review and comment on the current set of competency areas and competencies. Presented at the ARIS Broader Impacts Summit May 17, 2022.
