Rath Yatra is a famous Hindu festival that commemorates Lord Jagannath at the town of Puri in the state of Odisha. It is a grand chariot festival celebrated on the second day of the ‘Ashaadh’ month called Shukla Dwitiya. It is believed that Lord Jagannath is an avatar of Lord Vishnu and an incarnation of Lord Krishna in Orissa. On this occasion, devotees pull the chariots as a procession for three kilometres, allowing the bhaktas to offer puja and offerings on the way. The Chariot procession of the commences at the Badadanda and proceeds towards the Gundicha Temple for nine days, before returning to the Jagannath temple. This Festival attracts thousands of pilgrims not just from India but also from other various parts of the world. Every year, the chariots are newly carved and replaced for the deities and before the procession. The auspicious festival of Rath Yatra has been commemorated since the olden days of the Puranas. On this occasion, devotees who are restricted to visit the temple, are allowed to invoke the blessings of the deities.
