Carl Weber’s “The Family Business,” a BET series that has been running on the platform since 2018, premieres its sixth season Oct. 23. This week Adam Ferguson sat down with cast members Ernie Hudson, Valerie Pettiford and Michael Jai White to discuss what lies in store for the family. Pettiford provided an overview of the series during the interview. “The name speaks for itself, The Family Business,” Pettiford said. “We’re talking about an incredible family headed by L.C. Duncan and his right arm person Chippy Duncan, and their 6, 7, 8... How many kids do we have? Strapping kids. And it’s a family trying to handle their business and there’s a good side and a dark side, but no matter what it’s about love, it’s about loyalty, and keeping the family together.” White said he will showcase fighting moves this season that audiences have been requesting. “I’ve been doing this type stuff for a long time, so it’s kind of in my wheelhouse, and it was such a pleasure to bring that in addition to where we’ve been,” White said. “It’s something that the audience has been asking about, some folks knowing a little bit about that background, but it was a pleasure to kind of unleash a bit of that this season.” Hudson said he finds the show’s longevity remarkable in an era when series get cancelled quickly. “What really amazes me is the fan base, how it’s grown,” Hudson said. “I travel a fair amount and I get as many Family Business fans coming up to me as Ghostbusters. People have embraced this. It’s a real broad base of people that just fell in love with the family.” Hudson said the show resonates because it depicts a family pursuing the American dream. “This is a family that’s in pursuit of the American dream, and this is their way of achieving it, and they’re committed to it, and it’s about leaving their legacy,” Hudson said. “This is what so many of us look for.
