Knossos is the largest and most famous Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete and Europe's oldest city. The first settlements were as early as 7,000 BC. The Palace of Knossos was built in the Bronze Age around 2,000 and with extension to 1,400 BC. It is estimated that the urban area surrounding the Palace in the peak period (around 1,700 BC) around 100,000 people lived in the Bronze Age, making it therefore the first real city of the European Continent. The urban area of Knossos had a high level of technology for the provision of water to sustain such a large population, far ahead of other settlements in that period in the world. The Palace of Knossos is also known in history as the place where the famous Minotaur lived and where the Labyrinth was.
