On the morning of February 19, 2025, the owner of a lodge in Jhunsi, a town in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, headed toward the room of a guest who was supposed to check out that day. The lodge owner had gone there simply to inform the guest that it was time to vacate the room soon and that they should pack their belongings before the next guests arrived. A man and a woman were staying in this room, having come for the sacred Hindu pilgrimage during the Maha Kumbh Mela of 2025, a grand event that occurs once every twelve years and lasts for 45 days. The lodge owner knocked on the door several times, but there was no response from inside. Moments later, he realized that the door was actually unlocked. He then pushed it open completely and stepped inside. However, he immediately noticed blood seeping out from under the bathroom door, and the sight left him in shock. Overcome with anxiety, he opened the bathroom door, and what he saw made him scream in horror. Lying on the floor, drenched in blood, was the lifeless body of a woman named Meenakshi. Terrified, the lodge owner ran to his room to grab his phone.
