They are probably the most famous unknown band in the world: Snow Patrol, the third big British overwhelming pop-rock band alongside Coldplay and Muse. Unlike Coldplay and Muse But even though Snow Patrol has sold over 20 million albums, sold-out stadiums, extensive radio presence and international success, the band still flies slightly below the radar of mass perception. Maybe it's because their two biggest hits to date, "Chasing Cars" and "Run," are ballads. Songs written and arranged so subtly, so unobtrusively and powerfully, that you feel their pulse rather than their melodies. Their songs are played at births, weddings and funerals. Because they offer comfort in bleak times. "It's okay to get lost" "The Forest Is The Path" is the name of the new album by Snow Patrol, the band from Glasgow and Belfast. It means: The forest is the path. Accepting the impenetrable as a given - and still daring to go through it. Recognizing the hopelessness and still taking the next step. At least that's what Snow Patrol thinks. On their new album, they reflect on the adversities and most obscure moments of life in twelve self-written tracks. "For me, the title of the album represents the feeling of having lost your way in life," explains lead singer Gary Lightbody, who also says: "But sometimes it's completely okay to get lost. The forest, the tangle, the trees, the roots are all a kind of path. Sometimes we look for a way out, even though we just need to be in the here and now." Daring the impossible. An attitude to life that is already evident in one of their biggest hits, "Chasing Cars" (2006). Gary Lightbody says he got it from his father: "He was a funny guy. Unfortunately he died a few years ago. In that respect, the song makes me sad because it brings back memories of my father, who always had a cheerful saying for everything. I miss him." Songs for the beautiful and difficult moments in life Snow Patrol - the snow patrol. The band that pulls you out and saves you when the avalanche of life collapses on you. Contrary to many founding myths - Gary Lightbody was never going to make music professionally: "My family wasn't musical at all. My mother and father owned maybe seven vinyl records between them, six of them country. The only non-country record was the one with songs by Lennon and McCartney played by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. So we had a kind of Beatles record in the house, but even that was only a cover version." The unfiltered rawness of country. The orchestral grandeur of even the quietest song. Both can still be found in Snow Patrol's DNA today. Songs so finely written and arranged that you notice their pulse rather than their melodies. Songs for life. Their first hit "Run" (2003) has already accompanied millions of people, saved lives and provided comfort - even to a certain extent to Snow Patrol itself, as Lightbody explains: "We wrote 'Run' when we had nothing. Our electricity was literally turned off. In the song, I imagined a life in which I could protect the people I love." At her concerts, says Lightbody, everyone sings along to this song. It has helped some people through serious losses, others have played it at their wedding, at the birth of their child, at big moments in life. Personal assessment and encouragement: "Things will get better again" Always be there. For everyone. A pressure that Gary Lightbody eventually found hard to bear. He speaks openly about writer's block, about his former alcohol addiction, which erased years of memories. He slipped into the spotlight at a school performance with a song by REM: "I had never sung in public before then and my friends were really surprised: 'Damn, we didn't know you could sing. You have a great voice.' It was like I needed someone to tell me that." Many times in his life he has panicked because he believes he has not yet reached the point where he should be. "We are always told that time moves in a straight line. But in our hearts we feel that this is not true. It speeds up or slows down depending on whether we are happy or unhappy, grieving, enjoying something or racing through life wondering, 'Where the hell did the last year go?'" For Lightbody, the feeling of being out of touch with life is part of it - as long as you don't lose yourself. He says: "Reconnect firmly to the ground beneath your feet and things will get better."
