In the early morning of December 4, 1969, the Chicago police assassinated Fred Hampton, Chairman of the Illinois Black Panthers. This was a coordinated effort with the FBI via its COINTELPRO program. It took 14 years to settle a civil lawsuit in favor of the victims, but there were no criminal convictions* related to the killing. No one went to jail. No one even lost their job. The movie is Judas and the Black Messiah. It focuses on the short life of a civil rights leader, Fred Hampton. Fred was 21 years old when he was killed. The "Judas" in the story was an undercover informant working for the FBI, Bill O'Neal. There were two books I researched for this episode. One was The Assassination of Fred Hampton by Jeffrey Haas, one of the Peoples Law Office (PLO) attorneys that worked on the multiple cases over those 14 years. Necessarily, it covers the court cases in detail. Part of the institutional racism uncovered in this story involves not just police, the State's Attorney (Hanrahan), and the FBI, but a judge named Joseph Perry. The second book is "COINTELPRO: The FBI's Secret War on Political Freedom." You can see how criminal J. Edgar Hoover is but he did not act alone. Much of this information became public only in the mid-70's, after Watergate, through the Church Committee. But my gut tells me very few people are aware of the story of Fred Hampton and how it was a part of a much larger and insidious scheme to deny basic civil rights to minorities and left-of-center voters and organizers in this country. (*) I misspeak in the video regarding a criminal trial. The first of four trials was a criminal trial, which resulted in a hung jury and the charges were dismissed by Perry after 18 months.
