Honey Locust (Gleditsia triacanthos) is similar to the Black Locust in the way it was used in the Western United States. There are plenty of mature trees to be found in rural areas from when they were planted during the Great Depression by the CCC. They have also been used as an urban ornamental tree. They fix nitrogen but, like the Kentucky coffee tree, the method is at a slower rate than with nodule forming bacteria and the process is currently unknown. Some research indicates it may be though the dropping of leaves. There are several uses for the pods, but other than cracking them open as a child and tasting the "honey", I have never know anyone else to use the pods as vegetables.
