Long Coat Ceremony Celebrates New Medical Residents at Community Medical Center

Community Medical Center, an RWJBarnabas Healthy facility in Toms River, New Jersey, held its first long coat ceremony this week for its graduate medical education residents. Now a teaching hospital, Community Medical Center (CMC) has launched their program with 27 newly-graduated doctors in internal medicine, emergency medicine, and podiatric medicine and surgery. The transition from the short white coat denoting a medical student to the long coat of a doctor has significant symbolism for physicians. For many of the students, the pandemic prevented traditional graduation or white coat ceremonies at their medical schools, and CMC’s ceremony was a celebration of all of these important events, combined.
