In this video I will be talking about writing in diary’s or writing journals and writing in your art journal and what’s the difference. I have my written diaries spread out on the table, I will show you some of those. I will also show you some art journals in which I started using text, like quotes, lyrics, poems and later on, my own texts. I’ve discovered ‘free writing’ lately, so I will show you some of my new pages in the art journal ‘Home’. At the end of the video I’ll be giving 3 assignments to do yourself, so make sure you watch it until the end. CONTEST! Guess the number of diaries on my desk! Leave your answer in the comments. The first one with the right answer wins a set of my greetings cards 'Angels'. My first art journal When I was 7, nearly 8 years old, I started writing in my first diary. I think this one can be seen as an art journal, for two reasons. The first one, is that it’s filled with text as well as drawings. This book is really a collection of memories I didn’t want to forget, just as I am doing in my art journal nowadays. I was a very thoughtful kid and was aware of unique moments in my life or things that were about to change. I thought these things were important to save and to share. I wanted to put these things down to never forget. This is why we journal, isn’t it? The second reason is that it’s not private. Everyone was allowed to read this one. The ones that came after were all strictly secret for the rest of the world… and with no illustrations. They were full of emotions and struggles… Selecting a diary When I’m about to buy new diaries, I select them on covers. When I see a cover I already know which period it is about. Many of these are from the brand Paperblanks, I adore those little artsy books. In times when I had no budget, I bought simple notebooks, that I customized myself. Writing and painting separately Writing was always a way to express myself, just like drawing. I could get control of my thoughts, I could write things of off me, analyzed things and came often to a solution. Throughout the years I never quit writing. But it was always a separated thing, on its own. Also my paintings were separated… I could’t even think about adding text to one of my canvases. Although it would look nice on this one behind me! The first scribbles in my art journal As soon as I started with art journaling I was sometimes using texts, for example quotes or lyrics. Also, I often titled the pages I’ve been working on. In my later books I added songs and poems written by myself and I had to find solutions to let them match with the pages. Free writing In my most recent art journal, I wanted to try something new and find a way to integrate texts with images. I call it 'free writing'. For me, it’s intuitive writing, just starting to write down words, mostly without spaces. I think the magic happens when you do both, painting and drawing; you are engaging a different part of your brain. The words that come out are coming from a kind of inner source, coming from intuition. The mix of text and images is for me a new way to express myself even more, and to make my work more soulful and more of my personality is more represented. Ways to censor your written texts: Glue down your text upside down; Write your text on thin paper and glue it down your text mirrored; Overlap your text with watery paint; Overlap your text with thin pieces of paper, natural elements, etc.; Glue down your text in the middle of the book, so a part of the text is in the middle of the book; Fold your text on two third, so you can still read a bit of the normal text, and the rest is mirrored (you can see this in one of my students results; A combination of all these methods. If you’d like to be able to still read your own text, make a photo or make a copy of it, before you use these ways to censor. 3 assignments to use text in your art journal 1. Describe your day; things you have done, people you’ve met/spoken to; things you were thinking and feeling; things you’ve been reading. Pick out one sentence and write it down, without spaces. Continue writing and associating, it doesn’t have to do anything with your day anymore. Just write in a free way and see what happens. 2. Write a labyrinth. Cut out a circle (or draw one in your art journal) and start writing. You could start in the middle of the circle or start on the outside, or do both and experience the difference. 3. Write a short poem, for example a haiku about something you’ve pictured in your art journal. A haiku is a type of Japanese poem that always uses the same number of syllables in a three-line format:the first line is five syllables. The second line is seven syllables. The third line is five syllables. Unlike other poems, haikus usually don’t rhyme.
