It is a truth universally acknowledged that Jane Austen loves irony! What is the secret irony in Jane Austen's opening lines of Pride and Prejudice? Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice has one of the most famous openings in English literature: "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife. However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighbourhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters." There is much to say about just these two sentences. We know that Jane Austen was a master of irony. So what are the ironies of the sentences that begin Pride and Prejudice? What are the jokes? What can we learn from the novel’s opening couple of sentences? In the video, I consider in detail the nuances of Jane Austen's choices of language and diction, their implications and tone. I also explain the law of coverture that was in operation in the Regency period in the early nineteenth century (when Jane Austen published all her novels). I analyse how Jane Austen plays with ideas of coverture, in relation to women and marriage, in the reference to "rightful property". I also wonder whether Jane Austen is making a metafictional ironical joke at her own expense about novelistic convention!
