The otherworldly INTRO: (1:42) The opening measures set the scene, creating a meditative atmosphere, almost lulling the listener into a trance. During the intro, we are going to be using our thumb and play some drone notes on the open C# strings. The Intro slowly builds the entire time until the final crescendo. 2. PRE-VERSE #1: (12:28) After the sitar section, the drums get things going with a DEEP drum groove. The bass comes in and locks in with the drums, and we go into a short, but infectious pre-verse. The key thing to focus during this part is playing in the pocket. It can be easy to rush a little, but try to stay on the back of the beat. This creates a little more space in the bass line, which gives the drums room in the mix to come through. Pocket playing can take years to master, and this is the perfect part to practice. 3. VERSE #1: (17:35) The verse starts when Al comes in with the first line of lyrics. We play a very similar bass line as in the Pre-Verse, just slightly dialed back in our pick attack. Since we are playing essentially the same part, let’s play all the way through the first verse, nice and slow, and then get right into the 2nd Pre-Verse. 4. PRE-VERSE #2: (20:22) The 2nd Pre-Verse starts and we continue playing the same line, with a really cool line in the middle. Here is the whole Pre-Verse, and then let’s check out that line in the middle. 5. VERSE #2: (20:49) Verse 2 enters with the lyrics, “Nicodemus, awaits in vigil weeping.” We play the same bass part as in Verse #1, with a slight change happening right at the end. Let’s check out the entire Verse part, and then break down the new ending. 6: PRE-VERSE/VERSE #3 COMBO: (25:47) For the last Pre-Verse and Verse sections, the bass line is pretty much the same, minus some slight variance. I’m going to play through the final Pre-Verse/Verse combo without diving into the small changes. As always, thank you so much for checking out this video! I really hope you enjoyed it and I am grateful for your support. Part 2 is in the works, and will break down the entire ending section, so stay tuned! If you are interested in the lyrics, I have put together a series of lyrical analysis posts on my instagram account: @beholden.to.the.riff Thanks again, and here are the final Pre-Verse and Verse parts, played once slowly, and once at full speed. ✅Throughout the lesson, I will play through each measure and highlight any techniques that might help get this thing up to speed. ✅I really recommend downloading the interactive TABs found in the description. These things are awesome and are sunk up with the actual song allowing you to slow down the speed while you learn the song - They rule. 🐵This song is a MOUNTAIN of RIFFS and REALLY FUN TO PLAY ------------- 😎Hope you like the lesson and would love to know if you liked it and what songs you'd like to learn next! 🦍Follow Beholden To The Riff on Instagram for more Tutorials, Riffs and Heavy Music -Thank you so much ~ Jered
