Outside the window of the black SUV, destroyed and in some places completely obliterated houses flash by in the village of Hlushkivka, Kupiansk community. The road is littered with fragments of bricks, glass, and torn-down power lines. The area is deserted—no sign of life—only the sounds of outgoing and incoming artillery fire can be heard. This scene is typical of all the villages on the left bank of the Oskil River, where Russian forces continue to press and use a foothold in the area of Kruhliakivka and Kolisnykivka to advance. We are traveling with volunteers from Animal Rescue Kharkiv to the edge of the village, heading to an abandoned farm to evacuate horses. A soldier driving us noticed the abandoned animals while retreating from a position and contacted the volunteers. Two days earlier, they had already rescued one horse. Now, they are on a mission to save two more left behind. The farm is desolate, gray, and eerily quiet. Around and inside the hangar, we see the carcasses of dead animals. The two horses the volunteers came to rescue are standing in a corner of the hangar. Within minutes, we hear the buzzing of a drone and a hit on one of our vehicles. This report chronicles just one day in the lives of volunteers who risk everything to save animals from the red zone. As of late November, when this report was filmed, according to DeepState, the abandoned farm in Hlushkivka was located on the edge of Ukrainian-controlled territory and the gray zone near the forest where active fighting continues.
