The successful evacuation of patients at Tulane Hospital amid a city drowning in floodwaters is one of the university's proudest moments. Tulane physicians and staff endured temperatures over 100 degrees as they moved the sick to safety – manually carrying each one of the patients from the hospital down two flights of stairs to a makeshift helipad in a nearby parking lot. Meanwhile, Tulane medical residents and doctors put their skills to work immediately, caring for those no longer served by the city’s damaged Charity Hospital. Tulanians set up makeshift clinics around town and saw hundreds of patients a day. Those sites grew from mere card tables and ice chests to what is today a national model for community care, with 80 clinic sites in New Orleans. Medical school students were forced to continue their training elsewhere, while Tulane’s buildings were repaired. Medical students were scattered throughout Texas, with many hosted by Baylor University for a full year. It was a selfless odyssey that has shaped a Tulane medical education today. Produced by Mary Mouton, videography and editing by Jake Springfield.
