#1950s #Ipana #toothpaste #commercial #BuckyBeaver #JimmieDodd #defunct #BristolMyersSquibb (c)1950s Bristol-Myers Squibb Did a quick search; and this version hasn't been uploaded by anyone else. This is part of a series of 1950s commercials for the long-gone Ipana toothpaste. Most of these ads featured a character named Bucky Beaver (voiced by Jimmie Dodd; best known for his role as the host of the original Mickey Mouse Club; fittingly as the character was originally created at Disney). In this version, Bucky is a stagecoach driver in the Old West facing off again the villainous Mr. Decay Germ, but who manages to defeat the germ with Ipana (the tooth decay gang doesn't put up much of a fight here). Another version (with Bucky in space) appeared on the 1991 Looney Tunes special "Lunar Tunes" (in which Marvin the Martian went to an interplanetary court to convince the rest of the universe why he should be allowed to blow up the Earth; with Bugs Bunny representing Earth); and the jingle was briefly referenced in the 1978 movie "Grease". Dodd would not be the only Mickey Mouse Club connection; as a 1959 spot features Annette Funincello promoting the toothpaste. Ipana gradually began fading away by the 1960s due to Bristol-Myers being uninterested in color television programming; and also began increasingly focusing exclusively on pharmaceuticals at the expense of basic care products such as Ipana, which disappeared in the U.S. during the late 1970s (it continued being manufactured overseas; being especially popular in Turkey)
