In this video we discuss paramagnetism, one of the three types of magnetism seen within materials. Paramagnetism occurs in materials that have an intrinsic dipole moment, however at high temperature the dipoles are randomly oriented so as to not produce a net magnetisation. This typically occurs within materials consisting of atoms with an incomplete outer shell of electrons. However, for lower temperatures, we find that materials become paramagnetic, and we derive the temperature dependence of this effect, which is known as Curie's Law.
