We sit down with Chris Hayden of Florence and the Machine and ask him about drumming and being on tour. Here is his transcript: We've just come away from the NME awards and Florence has picked up two awards, so that was great. We started in Dublin two days ago, had yesterday off and we start now. I think this is a full-on part now from Bournemouth on. So for this tour I've been using the same setup as I was using for the Lungs tour, which are 14" K Custom Hybrid HiHats, a 21" K Custom Hybrid Ride, a 18" Dark Crash and a 20" Crash of Doom. It's great at accenting parts of the song and its got a great wash to certain parts, and yeah that's my favorite. I used a lot of it in place of the ride actually, just very soft. I was using it as a wash under everything and using it with a beater or with a stick. It just gives a really nice kind of soft, dark undertone to everything really gently in the background. We just experimented with different cymbals, different crashes, and we kind of came up with a general setup after going through a few crashes. We tried changing from 17", to 18", maybe a 19" and swapping over the rides as I said. We ended up sticking with the cymbals I'm using on the tour really. We're just changing the configuration around which is kind of what helped with the songs I suppose. Each song was different. The sounds I'm looking for in a cymbal are, especially with Florence and the Machine, more of a darker, kind of dark wash of gongy kind of sounds or tribal sounds. Flo's not really into toms and tribal sounds. Just really dark sounds really. I started off with just a four-piece kit with one cymbal and I've only added two cymbals to it and one floor tom. I've got a few electronics going on and some triggers so it's more difficult for Wiff to set up for me now I suppose. It's still the same kind of basic, how I started thing.
