A project implementation committee, chaired by Chief Secretary Dr A Jayathilak, met on Monday to chart the way forward. A favourable decision permitting VISL to acquire land for infrastructure could mark a major shift in port-driven development. “VISL can begin planning vital infrastructure even before gateway traffic commences,” said an official from the ports department. “We require container yards, terminals, logistics parks, and warehousing in place to handle large cargo volumes once the port becomes operational. However, final approval from the government is essential to initiate this.” The officer also highlighted slow progress on related infrastructure, such as the Outer Ring Road. “This must be seen not merely as a road project but as a critical enabler for port operations,” they added.
