Like us on Facebook: / touchbackthe Follow on X: / touchbackthe Sacramento doesn't have a lot of well-known people, teams, or businesses. And perhaps its two most famous, Tower Records and Shakey's Pizza, closed down decades ago. Yet, each one lives on in an unexpected location...Japan. The most surreal thing about setting foot into Tower Records in Japan is that it feels oddly familiar for those of us who spent hours upon hours browsing and listening to music at any of the Sacramento locations. It is like traveling back in time, some 20 years, and returning to a bygone era. Meanwhile. Shakey’s never had the largest presence in Sacramento. However, the chain grew rapidly from its humble beginnings and nearly 300 stores by the 1970s. That is when Shakey’s went international, including an expansion into Japan in 1976. The bubble eventually burst, and the pizza parlor has been in decline for some time now. Yet, many of the traditions that were first established on 57th and J Street are still to be found at all Shakey’s regardless of time zone. The last Tower Records closed in 2006, and with it, I always felt like Sacramento lost a piece of its soul. Our fair city doesn’t have a lot of hang its hat on. Like, if you asked most folks in Japan what they knew about Sacramento, the most frequent answer, and for many, the only response would be Arnold Schwarzenegger. I’m not even joking. Like most things from small towns to make it big, where it came from often nothing more than a footnote or trivia question. And fair enough. If you are buying a CD from Tower in Tokyo or eating at Shakey’s Pizza in Manila, why do you care about where the company was founded? For someone from Sacramento, there is a major reason to care. Tower Records and Shakey's Pizza carries on out city's legacy even if it happens to be in Japan. But it's worth reading either way.
