Our friends at Tierschutzbund Zurich and Animals Angels have once again released a video on the terrible conditions of the Bouvry Exports Calgary's feedlots. Bouvry is Canada's largest horse slaughterhouse. Since 2012, the Tierschutzbund Zürich (TSB Zürich) and the Animal Welfare Foundation (AWF) have been conducting observations in the fattening pens at Bouvry together with their partner organization Animals' Angels USA. There have been massive animal welfare problems for years. Sickly fattened horses, injured and dying animals remain without care. In the bitter cold down to minus 30 degrees Celsius in winter or scorching heat (over 30 degrees Celsius) in summer, the horses are left without weather protection. There is no medical care. A specification of the European Commission requires that US horses remain in the fattening pens for 6 months before slaughter and prohibits the use of important painkilling and anti-inflammatory drugs such as phenylbutazone for consumer protection reasons. This often leads to a long suffering. Laminitis is one of the most noticeable diseases, caused by fattening feed, obesity and neglected hooves. Laminitis is extremely painful and requires emergency treatment. The Swiss importer Skin Packing sees horse husbandry in Canada differently and writes on its website for Bouvry Exports: "We import the horse meat directly from Canada. We source it mainly from the Bouvry farm in Alberta, which is undoubtedly the most species-appropriate and respectful horse breeding in the world The horses live there in semi-freedom." (Source: www.skin-packing.com/les-produits/canada/) AWF and TSB Zurich together with their partner organizations Animales Sin Hogar (Uruguay), Animals' Angels (USA), Canadian Horse Defence Coalition (Canada), Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses (Australia), Dier&Recht (Netherlands), Fondation Franz Weber ( Argentina), GAIA (Belgium), IHP Italian Horse Protection (Italy), and Welfarm (France), supported by the Eurogroup for Animals (Brussels) are working to bring an import ban on horsemeat from these these horrible conditions.
