How laparoscopy can help in solving the problem and give hope for natural conception. If you're suffering from infertility and tubal blockage is the cause, this video is for you. The fallopian tube can be blocked due to various reasons. Most common causes are pelvic inflammatory disease, pelvic infection, any previous tubal surgeries or abdominal surgery, endometriosis, tuberculosis, or having previously had an ectopic pregnancy. So usually, fallopian tube blockage may be complete or partial, which will prevent the egg from meeting the sperm and make natural pregnancy impossible. Laparoscopy can help us determine the reason for tubal blockage. Yes, in many cases, laparoscopy helps us directly visualise and understand the cause and also treat the underlying issue. Many times, a flimsy tubal obstruction due to small tissue can be cleared just by doing the procedure, where the dye flushes out the tube and makes it patent. Sometimes, when there are adhesions surrounding the tubes, they can be cleared by adhesiolysis, fimbrioplasty, or salpingoplasty. Yes, laparoscopy not only repairs or opens up the tube but also helps in treating underlying causes like endometriosis or tubal adhesions. Once the tubal function is regained, the egg can meet the sperm, and natural pregnancy is possible without the need for IVF. Many women will conceive within 2 to 3 months of a successful laparoscopic procedure. Like any other surgery, laparoscopic procedures do carry risks, especially when the tubes are diseased. But with surgical expertise and proper case selection, we always try to preserve tubal function as much as possible. Usually, if it is just a diagnostic laparoscopic chromopertubation (that is, to look for patency of the tube), we don’t advise any waiting period. But if the surgery is a little complicated or if there are any adhesions, we usually advise 4 to 6 weeks of rest for better healing. If the tubes are too damaged or severely blocked, the surgery may not be successful. In that case, we may have to remove or clip the tube because hydrosalpinx (swollen tubes) can reduce the success rate of IVF. So don’t lose hope. We are always here to guide you with the best possible treatment. If laparoscopy is not possible or the tubes are totally damaged, then IVF will be the treatment of choice, where it bypasses the tube and fertilisation happens outside the body. The success rate of IVF is good, especially when the woman is younger.
