The tradition was suspended in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but thousands returned there on the eve of the new year on Jan. 21, 2023 to take part in festivities to ring in the Year of the Rabbit, including a ritual to be the first to offer incense to the temple’s deity at the stroke of midnight.
