Over the years there has been some controversy about using tests in Enneagram work, yet people new to the system are generally interested in taking tests to get them started in their journey of exploration. We have found that when test results are combined with some good feedback and coaching, they can launch important exploratory conversations that can help newcomers orient to the system and begin to develop the skills of self-observation. In the early 1990s, Don Richard Riso and Russ Hudson worked extensively on an Enneagram type test which they called the Riso-Hudson Enneagram Type Indicator. It is by far the most popular Enneagram test on the market and is one of the only independently validated Enneagram tests available. The RHETI has gone through several academic validation studies and has shown consistently accurate results. But beyond giving a probable diagnosis of a person’s dominant type, the RHETI can reveal many other details that can be extremely useful for coaching and personal development if one knows how to use this data.
