In this sermon, we explore why the Church starts our Lenten preparation not with tales of great ascetics like St. Mary of Egypt or St. Anthony the Great, but with the humble tax collector (publican) from Luke 18:10-14. The Pharisee boasts of his fasting and righteousness, yet it's the publican's simple prayer—"God, be merciful to me, a sinner!"—that justifies him before God. We reflect on connected Gospel themes: the humility of the tax collector, the Prodigal Son's return to the Father's embrace, and the judgment of the sheep and goats on Forgiveness Sunday (Matthew 25). True fasting isn't a diet or a boastful achievement—it's a medicine for the soul, aimed at cultivating humility, repentance, and freedom from passions and pride. As we approach Great Lent, let us flee the vaunting of the Pharisee and learn the humility of the Publican. Without humility, our fast becomes worthless or even harmful. The goal? A clearer vision of our fallen state and a deeper return to God's loving embrace. "He who exalts himself shall be humbled. Let us humble ourselves before God, and with fasting cry aloud as the Publican: ‘God, be merciful to us sinners.’" Subscribe for more Orthodox teachings on the liturgical year, Great Lent, and spiritual growth.
