sqadia.com gives you another informational video on pharmacology lecture. Today we have lined up a lecture on Opioid Analgesics. ▬ 📌 Introduction to Opioid Analgesics Opioid analgesics are drugs that mimic endogenous opioid peptides by causing a prolonged activation of opioid receptors (usually μ‐receptors). This produces analgesia, respiratory depression, euphoria, and sedation. Opium is the dark brown gummy exudate obtained from the poppy capsule, as the research progressed, opium was found to contain 20 alkaloids. Opium analgesics are used to reduce pain. There are two types of pain. 🔹Acute Pain 🔹Chronic Pain ▬ 📌 Endogenous Opioid Peptides and Opioids Receptors The opioid peptides act on the opioid receptors that are named, mu (m), kappa (k), delta (d), and N/OFQ, to relieve pain. Morphine and other opioids produce their effects by acting on specific opioid receptors. ▬ 📌 Opioids' Mode of Action You can learn the detailed mechanism of opioids in this video. All opioid receptors are G-protein-coupled receptors. Stimulation of these receptors inhibits adenylate cyclase resulting in decreased intracellular cAMP formation. They also facilitate the opening of K+ channels leading to hyperpolarization. In addition to this, they inhibit the opening of calcium channels. All these result in a decrease in the intracellular calcium which, in turn, decreases the release of neurotransmitters. ▬ 📌 Classification Of Opioids There are three main types of opioids, which includes, Agonist Opioids 🔸Mixed agonist-antagonist 🔸Antagonist Opioids For details of each type, click on this video and boost your learning. ▬ 📌 Morphine Morphine is a part of agonist opioids, that gives analgesic effect along with other effects. To learn about this in detail, watch our video, which includes, 🔹Mode of Action 🔹Pharmacokinetics 🔹Actions of Morphine 🔹Adverse Effects 🔹Tolerance and Physical Dependence 🔹Drug Interaction ▬ 📌 Classification On the Basis of its Source This classification includes, 🔸Natural Opium Alkaloids 🔸Semi-synthetic Derivatives 🔸Synthetic Opioids To learn the details, watch this video and enjoy easy learning. ▬ 📌 Adverse Effects of Opioids You can learn side effects with easy mnemonic. For easy learning, watch this video and enjoy.
