Strategically located on the Bosphorus peninsula between the Balkans and Anatolia, the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, Istanbul was successively the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire, and the Ottoman Empire and has been associated with major events in political history, religious history and art history for more than 2,000 years. The city is situated on a peninsula which is surrounded by the Golden Horn (Haliç), a natural harbor on the north, the Bosphorus on the east and the Marmara Sea on the south. The Historic Peninsula, on which the former Byzantium and Constantinople developed, was surrounded by ancient walls, built initially by Theodosius in the early fifth century. The Outstanding Universal Value of Istanbul resides in its unique integration of architectural masterpieces that reflect the meeting of Europe and Asia over many centuries, and in its incomparable skyline formed by the creative genius of Byzantine and Ottoman architects. The distinctive and characteristic skyline of Istanbul was built up over many centuries and encompasses the Hagia Sophia whose vast dome reflects the architectural and decorative expertise of the 6th century, the 15th century Fatih complex and Topkapi Palace - that was continually extended until the 19th century, the Süleymaniye Mosque complex and Sehzade Mosque complex, works of the chief architect Sinan, reflecting the climax of Ottoman architecture in the 16th century, the 17th century Blue Mosque and the slender minarets of the New Mosque near the port completed in 1664. The Grand Bazaar is a major attraction in Istanbul. It is one of the world's largest and oldest covered markets dating back to 1461. Bargaining for goods is standard practice at the largest covered market in Turkey, rumored to contain over 4,000 shops. This famous bazaar is probably the largest and one of the oldest covered markets in the world. Established at the end of the 15th century, it consists of thousands of stores selling jewellery, carpets and rugs from Turkey and central Asia, clothing, souvenirs, spices, Turkish delight (lokum), antiques, leather goods and food. The bazaar can be accessed through several gates, including the Çarşıkapı Gate by the Beyazit tram stop and the Nuruosmaniye Gate. The Grand Bazaar is also home to two mosques, as well as a number of cafés, restaurants, banks and a Post Office. Egyptian Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı) Also known as the Spice Market, this bazaar is located in the historic district of Fatih in Eminönü. It is the second largest bazaar in Istanbul, and sells different kinds of spices, dried herbs, herbal teas and medicinal plants. There are also dried fruits, nuts, oils and confectionery. Sometimes, during the summer period, this bazaar may be open on Sundays. The Galata Bridge (Galata Köprüsü) is a 490 metre long drawbridge found in the Golden Horn estuary, which unites the old Istanbul with its more modern area. The Galata Bridge does not only connect different parts of the city, but is also a symbolic bridge, representing the connecting of cultures. Bridges and More Bridges The first bridge over the mouth of the Goldern Horn was constructed in 1845. Several years later in 1863, Napoleon II's arrival meant that it was substituted for a wooden construction, and afterwards other bridges were built in 1875 and 1912, and in 1992 the bridge you can see today was constructed. The Bridge Today Today at the bottom of the Galata Bridge there are various restaurants and cafés. Here, you can enjoy fresh caught fish and other typical Turkish dishes. It's a great place to see the coming and going of the boats as the patient fishermen sell their catch to the local restaurants. As well as being an important part of the urban landscape in Istanbul, the Galata Bridge occupies a major role in the myths and legends of the city, not to mention the hearts of Turkish citizens.
