Have you ever wondered if different species of birds can safely live together in the same aviary? I’ve asked that question for years—and finally decided to find out for myself. During the winter months here in South Carolina, my birds live safely inside my greenhouse in separate cages to stay warm. I’ve got a pretty diverse flock: macaws, cockatiels, Amazon parrots, African grey parrots, zebra finches, and even a parakeet. With some warm days rolling in, I decided it was time to let them stretch their wings and test out the giant aviary I built. Getting everyone out of their cages and into the aviary took a little convincing, but once they were in, things went surprisingly well. There was a small amount of squabbling at first as a pecking order was established, but after that, the birds settled in beautifully—flying freely, soaking up the sunshine, and enjoying the extra space. 👉 My takeaway: As long as birds have plenty of room, space to fly, and the ability to get away from larger or more dominant birds, mixed species can coexist very successfully. I’m excited to have these birds living outdoors full-time all summer long once winter is officially behind us. Thanks for watching, and remember you the more you know the more you grow!
