From Riverbeds to Ocean Depths: Inside the Cleanup of one of the world’s biggest sources of Ocean Plastic 2% of the world’s ocean plastic ends up in the Caribbean Sea through one massive source: The Motagua River in Guatemala. Covering an area of nearly 17,000 square kilometres in a 486 kilometres path along 96 municipalities, it is the largest river basin in Guatemala. “An animal,” as Alex Schulze, CEO and co-founder of 4Ocean, called it in our FairTalk for #WorldOceanDay ! This enormous and vital watercourse, which empties into the Caribbean Sea, transports at least 8,500 tonnes of waste annually, directly threatening the Mesoamerican reef, the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere, which stretches nearly 700 miles between Mexico and Honduras, and is a biodiversity hotspot. In the past 4 years, 4Ocean was able to pull between 3-4 million pounds of trash from the coastline in Guatemala. Learn about the large-scale collaboration it takes to relieve the ocean from its plastic grip, and how 4Ocean makes a large-scale impact not only on the coastlines but also in its communities.
