The original, released in 2012, was an extremely popular cigar when it came out, ranking #1 cigar of the year on many lists. The Maduro version was released in 2016, and although it hasn’t hit the top of “best cigar” lists, it’s gotten generally excellent reviews with 90+ ratings. The Maduro wrapper is a very dark color, almost like an Oscuro – in fact if you compare this to the My Father le Bijou (which is a true Oscuro wrapper) the Flor de la Antillas is darker. Binder and fillers are from Garcia family farms in Nicaragua, and the sticks are rolled at the Garcia factory. This is billed as a medium-full body cigar, and I would agree with that. There was a blast of red pepper early on, but it fell off about half-way to net about 8/10 in terms of body and strength. The best way to describe the flavor profile on this cigar is “complex.” Retrohales were an adventure – I got the usually woody base but there were blasts of dark chocolate, caramel, and nutmeg/cinnamon. Burn was okay, draw was great in that it was right down the middle – not too tight but not too loose either. Burn was not razor-sharp and a few minor re-lights were needed. But those were minor issues that didn’t diminish the experience in the least. All said, the overall smoking enjoyment is an 9.0/10 – this is quite a good cigar, I’d recommend trying one, or picking one up in a My Father sampler as I did. Some cigars don’t make the video cut.
