This was by far our most challenging hike yet as a family — but also one of the most beautiful. Join us as we tackle the iconic Red and Rose Valley trail in Cappadocia, Turkey, a 7-mile loop (should have only been 4) filled with breathtaking views, fairy chimneys, and narrow cave tunnels carved into the rock. While this trail isn't exactly ideal for young kids (ours were strapped to us the entire time!), we made it through the full 4.5-hour journey and are so glad we did. From sweeping panoramas to hidden cafes tucked into the valley walls, this is one of Cappadocia’s most rewarding hikes. We were still recovering from being sick, and definitely underestimated how tough this would be — but the scenery more than made up for it. If you’re hiking this route, give yourself time to explore, take breaks, and enjoy all the hidden gems along the way. NOTE: This hike was physically challenging and involved scaling up a mountain. Had we known this, we would NOT have attempted with our children. AllTrails had this listed as an easy-moderate trail. We try to never have the kids in carriers for too long, and of course, we gave them breaks, LOTS of water, and snacks throughout this hike (just didn't film this part). With this said, we believe this hike can be done safely with children who are able to walk it themselves, of course, with plenty of time for stops and breaks along the way. Try to start earlier than we did, so you're done by lunchtime and the midday heat. ⏱️ Chapters 00:00 - Intro 00:35 - Start of Our Hike | Where are we? 02:10 - Cave House on the Trail | Epic Views 03:57 - Drone Footage 04:51 - Back on the Trail | Exploring a Horse Ranch 05:26 - First Church 06:26 - Off to a Great Start | Broken Camera Lens & Getting Lost 07:44 - Back on the Trail 09:25 - Rock Tunnel 11:16 - Went the Wrong Way AGAIN! 11:37 - We Had to Climb the Mountain with a Rope! 12:04 - Made it to the Top | Reflections 13:53 - Drone Footage From the Top 14:37 - Continuing On | Cave Houses & Fairy Chimneys 15:49 - Why Do We Keep Getting Lost?? 18:03 - Regretting Our Life Choices at this Point | Back at the Top of the Valley 18:43 - We Found Water! 21:03 - Realizing AllTrails is the WORST! | Can't Figure Out Where to Go 22:05 - Powering Through the Rest of This Hike 23:40 - Final Stretch! 24:12 - Made it Back to the Car | Stats of Our Hike | Final Thoughts 26:08 - Drone Footage 🥾 Red & Rose Valley Hiking Tips: 1. Don’t attempt this with very young kids unless you’re fully prepared for a long day. 2. Use an offline trail app like AllTrails — but be ready to get lost (a little). Bring a portable charger! 3. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and sunscreen — there's little shade. 4. Plan to stop at one of the cave cafés along the route for tea or juice. 5. Wear sturdy shoes — some parts involve steep climbs and slippery rock. 6. Start early to avoid the warmest part of the day. 👨👩👧👦 About Us We’re the Gabbett Family — a traveling family sharing our adventures from around the world!
