@Therealdroneon and myself take a self-guided tour of an abandoned site in Shreveport, Louisiana. The land on which this old penal installation sits was once owned by an african american man before the ending of the Reconstruction of 1877, giving way to Jim Crowe laws. Its unclear how it came to be but the land was bought by Caddo Parish whom then built the facility in the year 1905. It then was charged with housing criminals with the most violent cases from throughout the state of Louisiana. Inmates here farmed the land and were fed from the crops they tended, as well as responsible for accruing a surplus of yeilds which were, in turn, sold to the community. These funds were used “to run the prison.” By its closing in the 1950’s, their prison had grown an ugly reputation due to the implorable condition in which inmates were held and starved to death “for punishment” or badly beaten by the guards.
