Should I study abroad in high school? In theory, it is a safer way to study abroad than going in college. How is it safer? You are living with a host family that supervises you and attending a sheltered high school, instead of going to college and taking the risk of getting in trouble off campus. You've watched too many comedies. I was actually thinking of horror movies like Hostel, but same difference. The difference is that a 16 year old in a high school has more supervision and protection than a 19 year old at college. And fewer rights. You'll get the same language immersion experience as you would studying abroad. Actually, you'd get a more realistic one because it is a home environment. I do not think learning the proper pronunciation of pass the peas with a surrogate mother correcting my pronunciation is realistic. It is more serious than having foreign guys laugh about your poor pronunciation but failing to say anything because they hope to hit it off with a foreign girl. And there's not much professional use for pick up lines and slang for ordering beer. Do you think I should study abroad in high school? One of the weaknesses is that you probably do not have as good a grasp of the language as you would after a few more years of high school language classes. The upside is that I'd learn the language faster because I'm younger. You'll learn a lot more at six than sixteen, but sixteen to nineteen is not that much of a difference. Are there other advantages of studying abroad during high school? If you are in high school, your parents have to pay for it. If you are in college, you have to pay for it, though any debts you rack up to pay for it might not be full paid off until your kids are in high school.
