https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smiling... Operation Smiling Buddha was the codename for India's first nuclear test, conducted on 18 May 1974 at the Pokhran Test Range. It marked India’s entry into the group of nations capable of producing and detonating nuclear weapons, making it the sixth country in the world to demonstrate a nuclear explosion. The test was carried out under the leadership of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, with key scientific contributions from Raja Ramanna and Homi Sethna. The device was a plutonium-based implosion-type nuclear bomb, developed by India’s nuclear program under the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. The explosion occurred at approximately 8:05 AM IST, in a vertical shaft about 107 meters (351 feet) underground. The yield of the explosion is generally estimated at around 8 kilotons of TNT, making it significantly smaller than the ~15 kiloton Hiroshima bomb, but still a major technological achievement for a country conducting its first nuclear test. India officially described the test as a “peaceful nuclear explosion” (PNE), emphasizing potential applications in engineering and mining. However, internationally, it was widely recognized as a demonstration of nuclear weapons capability. The operation was conducted under extreme secrecy—with limited documentation, scientists operating discreetly, and even many senior government officials unaware of the full scope. Notably, foreign intelligence agencies, including U.S. reconnaissance satellites, failed to detect the preparations in advance. The test had significant geopolitical consequences. It led to increased global concern about nuclear proliferation and directly contributed to the formation of the Nuclear Suppliers Group, aimed at restricting the spread of nuclear technology. It also intensified regional tensions, particularly influencing Pakistan’s decision to accelerate its own nuclear weapons program. Operation Smiling Buddha remains a defining moment in India’s strategic and scientific history, establishing the foundation for its later nuclear doctrine and subsequent tests, including the Pokhran-II nuclear tests.
