For example, the Abstract might have a word count limit of 300 words, and the entire paper, including the abstract, a limit of 5,000 words. Microsoft Word has useful word-counting tools that help you get this right. Section 1: Basic functions of the Microsoft Word word count tool Here I am in Microsoft Word with my sample paper. At the bottom left, we can see the number of words in the document. This automatically updates as I type more words [type words]. If I triple left click to select a paragraph, then the word count tool shows the number of words in that selected paragraph. To view more information on word count, I left click on the word count on the bottom left. A menu appears and I can see pages, words, characters with no spaces, characters with spaces, paragraphs, and lines. We can select the box to include text boxes, footnotes and endnotes, and we can see the word count goes up. Next, If I right click on the word count on the bottom left, a menu appears and I can select character count with spaces. Now the word count and character count are both visible on the bottom left. Section 2: How to check what is being counted and what is not To confirm whether or not some words are included in the word count, delete a word and see if your word count changes. Lets delete a word from the title, and the word count goes down so the title is included. Now let’s delete a word from the references, the word count goes down, ok that word is also included in the word count. Now, let's delete this graph with some text on it, and the word count didn’t change so we know that the words in this graph are not being counted towards the total word count of the document. This is because the word count tool does not include words that are embedded in images. If you cannot edit the text directly in Word, then the word count tool will not include those words. Section 3: How to view the word count of one section of your research paper To view the word count of a section of your research paper, put your cursor at the beginning of the section, scroll down to the end of the section, press and hold SHIFT and then left click at the end of the last text in the section. All the text of that section will be selected. Now we can view the word count of that selected section at the bottom. The second method to view the word count of a section in your research paper is to copy (CTRL+C) the section and paste it into an empty word doc. This is a great way to double check that your word count of a section is accurate. Section 4: How to exclude your Reference Section from your word count To view your paper’s word count without including your References section, you can either select your whole paper excluding your references, then view your word count at the bottom. Another method to exclude your Reference Section from your word count is to view your whole word count, record it, then select your references, view that word count, and subtract your reference word count from your whole paper’s word count. Outro Those are the basic word-count functions in Microsoft Word. Our next video will go into the advanced functions that serious researchers need to know.
