This town is known as "Little Fuzhou" due to the large number of descendants of Fuzhounese immigrants who settled here. The first influx of the Foochows was on 9th September 1903, when 303 immigrants from Fuzhou in China landed at a jetty in the Sitiawan River, with 60 more arriving one week later. The British encouraged rice farming initially, but these settlers eventually found rubber plantations to be more suitable and profitable. Later, these rubber estates were converted to oil palm plantations in the 1980s. Fast forward to today, Sitiawan is a bustling town that still retains its small town spirit.
