In Focus: Exploring The Panerai Submersible | MR PORTER

Panerai first used the Submersible name as far back as 1998, but only established it as a standalone collection in 2019. It denotes the brand’s most hardcore and capable dive watches, and is marked out by its rotating bezel. As you would expect from Panerai, it is rooted in the watchmaker’s history as a military supplier, but in recent times has come to represent the brand’s most forward-looking collection, noted for its use of alternative case materials and manufacturing techniques. We chose two watches from the current collection – the Submersible Blu Notte (PAM 01068) and Submersible Marina Militare Carbotech (PAM 00979) – for our exploration of what makes the Submersible such an icon of modern watchmaking, digging down into the design, the movements and the specific features that lead Panerai to describe them as “survival instruments”.
