High in the mountains of Nan Province in northern Thailand sits a small village called Bo Kluea, which literally means “salt well.” For more than 800 years, people here have been extracting salt from deep underground brine wells...an unusual practice in a country better known for sea salt. In this video, we travel from the historic city of Nan up winding mountain roads to visit this remarkable village. Surrounded by bamboo huts and cool mountain air, local families still use traditional methods to produce salt: drawing mineral-rich water from ancient wells and boiling it slowly over wood fires until pure white salt crystals remain. Long ago, this salt was an important resource traded across northern Southeast Asia, carried by caravans along mountain routes connecting this region with Yunnan in southern China. Along the journey we also explore the beautiful scenery of northern Thailand and stop along the way to sample fresh mountain vegetables and roots grown by local farmers. Bo Kluea is a rare glimpse into a tradition that has survived quietly for centuries...a place where history, nature, and daily life still move at an older rhythm.
